Gordon Brown needs a serious spinner

Recent polls have shown that the Prime Minister's efforts to pin Britain's spiralling recession on global market downturn are failing. What he needs is a new PR chief – a word wizard who can turn the most negative story into a positive one.

Step forward the unnamed staffer in the office of Senator Harry Reid, the Democratic leader of the US Senate, who is the hero (or villain – whichever way you see it) of this story that was told to me today (please note – I can't vouch for it, so as with any piece of spin, you'll have to make your own mind up whether you believe it or not).

Judy Wallman, a professional genealogy researcher in southern California , was looking into her family tree. She discovered that both she and Senator Reid shared a great-great uncle who was a notorious horse-thief and train-robber who was eventually caught and executed. She uncovered a photo of Remus Reid actually standing on the gallows, on the back of which is the following inscription: “Remus Reid, horse thief, sent to Montana Territorial Prison 1885, escaped 1887, robbed the Montana Flyer six times. Caught by Pinkerton detectives, convicted and hanged in 1889.”

She contacted Senator Reid, and asked him what he knew about their shared great-great uncle. This is the reply she got from his office:

“Remus Reid was a famous cowboy in the Montana Territory . His business empire grew to include acquisition of valuable equestrian assets and intimate dealings with the Montana railroad. In 1887, he was a key player in a vital investigation run by the renowned Pinkerton Detective Agency. In 1889, Remus passed away during an important civic function held in his honor when the platform upon which he was standing collapsed.”

Gordon – I suggest you get in touch right away. Before Dave or Nick do.
