I was preparing to eat humble pie when I read Gosport Councillor Mark Hook's forthright response to the letter that I and other readers of “The News” had published complaining at his campaign to kill off the Stokes Bay Festival.
Until I actually checked his claims.
Rather than being a killjoy, Mark "Bah Humbug" Hook says that he and fellow Tories in fact brought "Take That" to Gosport in the 1980s, and started the Waterfront Festival.
Remarkable achievements indeed. Particularly so when you consider Take That weren't formed until 1990. And that the Waterfront Festival was actually set up by Hook’s opposite number, the current LIB DEM Leader of Gosport Borough Council.
Perhaps Mr Hook would care to eat the humble pie. Or does he prefer pork pie?
